Sailor Moon.

I started watching Sailor Moon when i was 10, it was one of the first animes i started to watch other then Pokemon and Digimon. I remember i absolutely loved it, i fell in love with the characters straight away and couldn't wait for the next day so i could watch the next episode. I used to watch it on a channel called Fox Kidz. As soon as the second season was over though they cancelled it and a show called Dragonball Z was in its place i was so upset about this and refused to ever watch Dragonball Z and still to this day i have never watched it (sad i know).

Now i have got my daughter watching it and shes loving it so far. Sarah is watching the U.S version of it and i have noticed that it has missing episodes and missing some important storylines, especially the ending episodes. (I will talk about them further down the page don't want to spoil anything for people who want to watch it before getting to the spoiler parts =)). If you are going to watch Sailor Moon, i would recommend the Japanese version as you wont be disappointed but if you want to watch the U.S version you probably wont be impressed.

Sailor Moon began in 1992 and consists of five seasons Sailor Moon, Sailor Moon R, Sailor Moon S, Sailor Moon Super S and Sailor Moon Sailor Stars.

This post will be all about the first season and it will be mainly about the Japanese version but i will also say a few things about the U.S version because i have seen them both. The first season is all about the Sailor Senshi/Scouts rediscovering their true identities and their pasts. I will do posts about the other season eventually i just like mixing things up a bit.
Sailor Moon Is a romantic, action, adventure anime which was directed by Junichi Sato and written by Sukehiro Tomita. It was original a Japanese manga series written by Naoko Takeuchi. Its also known as Pretty Soldier Sailormoon or Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon. There are also video games, musical theater productions and a live action drama series. *SPOILERS*

Sailor Moon is about a 14 year old klutzy cry baby high school girl called Usagi Tsukino (Serena Tsukino in the U.S version) Who is a cancer and her blood type is O and her birthstone is pearl but you wouldn't know all this unless you watched the Japanese version because the U.S cut it out and cut the second episode also.
The Japanese name Usagi means bunny and there were a few jokes about her name in the series but the English changed her name to Serena so it would match her mothers name Serenity, so by doing that they cut the bits witched joked about her Japanese names otherwise it wouldn't of made sense. The U.S also came up with a few diffrent names for Sailor Moon like Celeste, Victoria and Darien.... Really Darien?? What were they thinking!
Usagi Tsukino meets a talking cat called Luna who tells her she is Sailor Moon one of the Sailor Senshi/Scouts and he quest is to fight evil and to find the Moon Princess and the other Sailor Senshi/Scouts.

Queen Metallia,  Queen Beryl and the four generals Jadeite, Nephrite, Kunzite and Zoirite

The first evil Sailor Moon has to fight off is the Dark Kingdom/Negaverse. Which appeared once before a long time ago and attacked the Moon Kingdom.
Queen Serenity sent the Moon Princess, her guardians, advisers and the Moon Princess first true love into the future to be reborn on Earth but only by sacrificing herself. The Dark Kingdoms/Negaverse first job is to gain energy for Queen Metallia to do that they start by draining the life forces of humans. They then start searching for the rainbow crystals. Once they gather the 7 rainbow crystal the silver crystal will appear.
If you have seen the Japanese and the U.S version of Sailor Moon you would also notice another big change. In the Japanese version Zoirite is a guy and in a relationship with Kunzite who is also a guy but the U.S didnt like that idea so they changed Zoirite into a girl. There are more same sex couples in the other seasons so i think that's why they stopped airing it but i will talk about that when i do a post about the other seasons.

While Sailor Moon is fighting the Dark Kingdom/Negaverse she meets the first Sailor Senshi/Scouts Sailor Mercury.
Her name is Ami Mizuno. In the U.S version her name is Amy Mizuno but one of there ideas was to call her Blue. Her powers are associated with water she is also the brains of the group.

The second Sailor Senshi/Scout, Sailor Moon meets is Sailor Mars.
Her name is Rei Hino. Her name means Solar Spirit. In the U.S version her name is Raye Hino but one of there ideas was Diana.
Shes a Shinto priestess. Her powers are associated with fire as well as psychic and spiritual ones.

The third Sailor Senshi/Scout to join the group is Sailor Jupiter.
Her name is Makoto Kino. Her name means Truth. In the U.S version her name became Lita Kino witch came from the word Lightning. They also had ideas of calling her Sarah or Maggie. Her powers are associated with electricity, plants and physical strength she is also the muscle of the group.

The last Sailor Senshi/Scout you meet in this season is Sailor Venus and another talking cat called Artermis.
Her name is Minaki Aino. In the U.S version her name was Mina Aino. They also though of Carrie, Monica and Elisha. Her powers are associated with love.

You also meet Tuxedo Kamen In the U.S version his name is Tuxedo Mask.
His name is Mamoru In the U.S version his name became Diaren but they did think of calling him Mark, i would have to say i prefer Diaren.Tuxedo Mask turns up to save the Sailor Senshi/Scouts constantly. He is the guardian of Earth and the Moon Princesses first true love. He then losses his memory of this until the final episodes.

Sailor Moon was my favorite out of all the seasons. It is also relate-able in a lot of ways with relationship problems, self consciousness and it also covers issues like homosexuality, sexuality in general. You also got to see the characters grow and mature and learn about them self's as the season progress.

I loved the ending to this season!
I couldn't stop crying! Well to the Japaneses version that is. Usagi/Serina found out she was the Moon Princess and her and Mamoru/Darien remembered that they were each others first love. The Sailor Senshi remembered there were meant to protect the Moon Princess and that they were also princesses from there planets. During the last 2 episodes the tears began, the Sailor Senshi died one by one so the Moon Princess could go on and save the Earth. In the episodes it showed the Sailor Senshis battle one by one and how they died. And showed Sailor Moon fighting with Mamoru/Darien because he was brain washed by The Dark Kingdom. In that scene it showed Mamoru/Darien hitting and choking Sailor Moon but Sailor Moon helped him remember who he really was but at that time it was to late Queen Berly sent a sharp object into his chest. At this point i was in tears.
Then it was time for  Sailor Moon to turn and fight Beryl and to do this she needed to use the Moon Crystal but to use this would mean she would die in return. Sailor Moon asked her friends the Sailor Senshi to help her and there spirits came to give her power.

The U.S version missed most of this out they cut the fights of the Sailor Senshi which made them shorter and less meaningful and they also cut the Scene with Sailor Moon and Mamoru/Darien so that was kind of emotional as well.
Well that's what i thought i didn't cry once watching the U.S version which was a disappointment to me especially because i thought the Japanese ending was my favorite part of the Anime.

The Japanese  are doing a new Sailor Moon this year and i have  been reading up on it and its supposed to be more like the manga, I have never read the manga but i shall one day aha. But i can not wait for the new Sailor Moon and see what its going to be like.

This is the Japanese opening to Sailor Moon.
This Song is called Moonlight Densetsu composed by Tetsuya Komoro with lyrics by Kanako Oda.

This is the U.S version on the opening. I have to admit i do like this intro i think this is the only good thing about the U.S version.

Thank you for reading :)
